Certificates, qualifications, NICEIC, insurance…what you need to know!
Reason Services are qualified electrical contractors and comply with all relevant building regulation and the electrical wiring regulations. We have have industry standard training and qualifications. In addition we ensure we carry out regular additional training to ensure safety, quality and compliance are at the forefront of our work.
Are we registered with the NICEIC or NAPIT?
The short answer is no, we do not currently hold a registration with either of these organisations.
Contrary to common belief, you do not need to register with a “Competent Person Scheme” to operate as an electrician in England. These two companies are private money making businesses who take large fees from electrical contractors in exchange for a few benefits, some which impact how an electrician can operate. The biggest of which is the ability to “self notify” work to the local Building Control where required.
They also offer some benefits to customers, as they will check, verify and regularly assess their members in a bid to ensure safety and quality. This has not prevented rogue traders and poor quality operators from gaining the NICEIC/NAPIT seal of approval, but it is a noble aim.
How do you sign off and issue certificates without NICEIC/NAPIT?
We issue clear and accurate records of work carried out in the form of industry standard certificates as defined in the Wiring Regulations. These are legally compliant and do not require a NICEIC/NAPIT logo to hold standing with an insurer or other body.
Our training and commitment to continuous development means Reason Services are qualified for both the repair and the installation or design of electrical circuits. In addition we hold business and professional insurance specifically for these works and meet the requirements that a CPS such as NICEIC would ask for.
What about building control and Part P?
The large majority of electrical works in a home do not require building control to be notified under Part P of the building regulations (wiring in dwellings). Where notification is required, it is often when larger scale works are taking place such as extensions or complete refurbs.
If notification is required, we will advise and inform you of your options. These include working with a CPS registered firm to make the notification for you, including electrical work for pre-approval with other works being carried out (eg. structural or building work) or other pragmatic solutions.
Commercial buildings are not subject to Part P and do not require notifications.
That is all very well, but why would I use you and not a NAPIT/NICEIC member?
The choice is always yours. By not flying the CPS flag, we are able to reduce operating costs while building and growing as a company. As a one-stop shop we also offer that rare thing, an electrician who will repair the walls afterwards. Or maybe you need someone to build the shed and supply the outdoor sockets, or plumb a kitchen and rewire the oven?
So are you just a handyman?
Well we are very handy to have around your home or business. What separates Reason Services from other handymen or property maintenance outfits is we have invested in the training and the equipment required to carry out high quality, certified and tested electrical work, whether it is a minor accessory change or a complete rewire.
